Is your sewer blocked, cracked or broken? Is there a dreaded ‘gulping’ noise coming from your drains? Is your sink unkindly returning unwanted items from your drain?
Whether you have a large problem that could cause serious structural damage or a DIY quick fix, it’s important you try to fix it up immediately.
From blocked drains to bursting pipes to bursting pipes, we’ve seen it all. Most people will experience a nasty plumbing surprise at least once in their lifetime however, when detected early enough, they can usually be resolved in a matter of minutes.
There are two types of sewer blockages:
- Blockages in the main sewer line
- Blockages in the private line that goes from your home to the mainline
If other people in your area have noticed sewer problems, then the cause will be public and therefore the responsibility of your local council to clear up the issue. If the sewage is coming from a single sink, toilet or other drain on your property then there’s a good chance you have a foreign object blocking your sewers.
The most common cause of blockages is an unwanted item being flushed down the toilet. This can happen at any time. Common objects include baby diapers, tampons, cat litter, oil and grease.
Prevention is Key
So please, throw these items into the garbage! Your sewers will not thank you for them and neither will your senses. The smell they generate is nothing short of stinky! Your home should be a sanctuary, a place of rest and somewhere you feel most comfortable. The last thing you want is a smell that resembles a dead cat first thing in the morning. Everything you’ve ever flushed down the toilet will come back to haunt you.
If you have a clogged kitchen or bathroom drain, simply pour a powerful chemical (such as a strong bleach) down the drain and this will usually remove the blockage immediately.
Taking on the Larger Issues
If you have a heavy clog in a pipe that connects all main drains into the house, or a large pipe outside the house is clogged, then you have a much bigger problem on your hands. The entire drainage system will need to be inspected. This is not something you will be able to tackle yourself. Rose Bay Plumbing® to the rescue! We will be able to resolve it quickly and efficiently within a few hours.
